[UPCOMING EXHIBIT] Nostalgia Overcome: Solo
us Art is pleased to announce the forthcoming solo exhibition of Yujean Chung's paintings curated by Jill Coklan titled, Nostalgia Overcome. The exhibition will be on view August 16th through August 31st, 2014 with the opening reception on Thursday August 21, 6-8pm at 547 W 27th St #307, New York. Yujean Chung is constantly interpreting moments from her past through painting, and as she overcomes nostalgic longing she is able to balance those emotions with the present. Her experiences come forth in the paintings with an abstracted style, representative of her paradoxical thoughts towards society. Living in three different countries ( Korea, Switzerland and America) at such a young age has forced her to survey the world and ultimately become a critic, using paint and canvas as the material to express her thoughts and opinions. This exhibition will encompass her most recent paintings made in 2014. Using paint liberally in a spontaneous and impulsive fashion, she lets her hands move before her head, without planning she creates by instinct. Though conscious decisions are made such as the colors or the movements of her hand, much is left up to chance. Adding glue to her medium can change the color and shapes of the painting once it dries, Chung welcomes the challenges that come with experimentation. Her method of working allows the unification of the present with the past, as she reflects on the past she creates physical gestures that become dominant attributes of the paintings. The dripping of the paint on the canvas, the crude mixing of colors and the bold brushstrokes are intentional and yet beyond control, therefore becoming a visual description of paradox. Following the Art Brut movement, which she cites as one of her influences, Yujean Chung asserts herself as a non-conformist; "Instead of satisfying peoples wants, as I am more freed from the past, not just focused on the nostalgia of the past, I managed to find what it means to do art, and find my personality in art.". Yujean Chung recently received her BFA in painting from New York University, where she was a member of the NYU Arts and Arts Professions Deans List. She has had several group shows and one solo exhibition at NYU's Common & Rosenburg Galleries.
