Shortly after, Nyle introduced his brainchild to music studios in L.A., which led to a career playing the EVI in studios producing movie soundtracks and television shows. This is the original and very hard to find BRASS STYLE Akai EVI wind controller system. This is a complete wind controller system featuring the EVI1000 BRASS STYLE wind controller, the super-smooth sounding REAL ANALOG EWV2000 companion sound module, connecting cable, BOTH of the Patchman Music EWV2000 Soundbanks Volumes 1 and 2, and all of the manuals. All you need to add is a pair of headphones or an amp. The EVI1000 controller is in very good condition. The mouthpiece is in new condition with no tears or cuts in it. The finger pads and sensors on the EVI are in excellent shape (the plating is not worn off). The rack mountable EWV2000 analog synth module is in great condition as well. It has the velocity upgrade chip installed (this is the latest version OS, version 1.3). The EWV2000 has excellent chord capabilities unlike some of the later Akai wind controller modules. It can trigger 4 note chords externally via MIDI. Internally, the EWV2000 has 2 REAL ANALOG oscillators and 2 REAL ANALOG filters per patch! It also has the wonderful FORMANT FILTER for added timbral variations which was missing in some later wind controller modules. The sound is super-smooth and expressive and it is capable of exceptionally fat analog leads and basses. The EWV2000 has jacks for Line Out, External In, Headphone Out, Program Up/Down footswitch, MIDI Out, Tape IN/OUT for saving and loading patches. The External In jack allows you to control ANY synth or sampler with the EWV2000 REAL ANALOG filters and VCAs. This provides SUPER-FAST RESPONSE since the modulation is via direct control voltage not MIDI! This unit responds so fast you can actually hum or growl into the mouthpiece to modulate the sound!! The EVI was manufactured and sold by the Akai company in the mid 80s, but later dropped due to insufficient sales. However, the EWI (electronic woodwind instrument) has continued to be produced by Akai, which currently offers 2 models of the EWI – the 4000s and the EWI USB. Both of these models offer EVI fingerings as an option, thanks to the advocacy of Matt and Patchman Music, so that people who want to play wind controllers using brass fingerings can do so on the EWI models. In 1987, Nyle Steiner's EVI and EWI Steinerphones are developed commercially and marketed by Akai as the Akai EVI1000 and EWI1000 along with their companion EWV2000 analog sound module. This is the beginning of a long relationship Nyle had with Akai. Akai went on to develop several more EWI models (the EVI model was not carried on by Akai past the EVI1000) including the EWI3000 and its EWI3000m module, EWI3020 and the its two modules the analog EWI3020m and the sample ROM based EWI3030m, and others The Akai EVI1000 is a wind controller from the late 1980's that used trumpet style fingerings. Despite it's trumpet fingerings, the mouthpiece is a pressure sensor with bite sensor of a design common with all EWI instruments. Because you don't "buzz" your lips or overblow, to access the 4th you touch a sense button on the canister. Speaking of the canister, it's a rotating plastic housing that allows your left thumb to roll over the octave keys. This cannister looking octave housing gives the instrument it's distinstive shape, and the original players sometimes called this EVI the "bug sprayer". The EVI1000 controller required the EWV2000 3U rack style synth module to interface with the controller, produce sounds with it's onboard analog synthesizer, and produce midi output. The Akai EVI1000 (Electronic Valve Instrument) was the first wind controller available from Akai. It (along with the EWI-1000) is based on the inventions of Nyle Steiner. Features include a seven octave range, touch sensitive keys (no moving parts), breath sensor in the mouthpiece to control of dynamics and timbre. Biting the lip sensor in the EVI controls the amount of glide. A vibrato lever on the EVI controls vibrato and modulation. The instrument has a special touch sensor control allowing the player to bend notes up or down. Lip sensors on the mouthpiece gives you expressive capability that approaches that of acoustic instruments. There are also numerous additional expressive controls including bend, glide, vibrato, etc. It is also possible to combine these instruments with external synthesizers and samplers to create unlimited new sonic possibilities. The EWV-2000 sound module is required to play an EWI1000 or EVI1000. It is a programmable analog synthesizer with 2 VCO's, 3 Filters, 2 Envelope Generators and 2 VCA's. It can perform as two parallel synthesizers with two different sounds or as a single complex synthesizer. Breath and lip pressure can control vibrato, pulse width, modulation, filter modulation and volume. The three different filters allow the creation of resonant formants for simulations of cups, mutes, strings and plungers. Like all the EWI modules, the EWV2000 features an External Input that allows other instruments to be processed through the EWV2000. Other features include wave envelope FM, 64 user programmable memories, and a 16 character backlit LCD. Additionally, the EWV-2000 is equipped with a MIDI out jack. It does not have MIDI in. Patches (all patch data/single voices) can be saved via analog cassette. The module is a 4U rack-mountable module or can sit on a flat surface as it is not very deep.
