R & D Scientist / Chemist

general supervision from the R& D Supervisor, performs the functions and operations of the Research Development department. Involved in planning, conducting and analyzing experiments, either with a definite end use (to develop new products, processes or commercial applications; to improve current applications) or to broaden scientific understanding in general. Duties and Responsibilities: • Devising and conducting experiments • Processing and analyzing results and data • Communicating results to the scientific community via published papers • Collaborating with industry/academia to apply the results of research and develop new techniques, products or practices • Presenting ongoing work and findings to colleagues at academic conferences, and summarizing the nature of their research, their methodology and their findings • Carrying out field work to inform their research • Teaching, training, demonstrating to or supervising students in academia or other members of staff • Devising or helping to draw up new research proposals for funding and/or review boards • Working in multidisciplinary teams (in academia, across different faculties or schools, and in industry, across different functions of the business) • Maintains records and complete documentation of research and test data • Preparation and extraction of test samples • Prepares various solutions including calibrators, controls and reagents • Initiates start of day procedures including assuring appropriate chemical levels, pressure levels, performance of routine maintenance • Loads equipment with various batches and orders testing sequences • Analyzes testing results from various resources including numerical and graphic results. Validates test results. • Assures Chain of Custody (CoC) procedures are followed at all times (when applicable) • Performs equipment troubleshooting and repair • May be asked to assist in other areas of the lab (if signed off for the operation) • Follows all laboratory policies and procedures; adheres to all health and safety standards • Participates with company strategies including the elimination of waste, accurate and timely results and cost savings initiatives • Incumbent may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth above to address business needs and changing business practices QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge of: General lab operations; must be competent in all assigned functions to independently perform the duties and responsibilities of the area. Ability to: Demonstrate competence in required extraction techniques, aliquotting skills, standards preparation, instrument maintenance, process documentation and data analysis. Work independently with minimum direct supervision. Follow all laboratory standard work practices and policies. Education and Experience: Bachelor’s degree in Life Science, with demonstrated knowledge/skills sets in Chemistry required. Toxicology experience preferred. Additional related analytical experience or formal education a plus. Experience with LCMSMS and various extraction techniques preferred. Background check and pre-employment drug screen required. Experience as a senior lab tech or research analyst strongly preferred. Physical: Position requires stationary standing for extended periods, extended arm movement, bending, twisting, lifting up to 25 lbs on a routine basis. Vision: See in the normal visual range with or without corrections. Hearing: Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction (required for audio alarms).
